5e3x2 rebuild into ????

I have decided that i am not a tweed guy. After turning my 5f1 champ clone into a bastardized BF champ, and finally liking it. I have decided to do something different with my double deluxe.

CUrrently thinking something like a matchless spitfire type pre. vol/tone and a master volume.

Don't know if the PT is powerful enough to handle an extra preamp tube (though the chassis has already been cut for one) in which case I might try a JCM800 pre in there.

Nothing i "need" to build, just got a pile of parts and a 5e3x2 i don't like.

If it's a Weber kit, the PT has a 6.3V/6A heater winding and 200 mA for the HT winding. That is plenty of current to handle extra tubes. They use the same transformer on the Super Reverb clone.

Yeah, it's the weber kit. I looked up some of the other kits that use the same PT, and yeah, there are amps with more tubes, so I think I would be fine to add another preamp tube if i get the urge.

Built a quick version of a Spitfire pre and sort of rouhg grafted it to the 5e3x2 output (well i did change the PI as well) haven't gone over it yet or tested, that should be in the morning.

I dunno, i was thinking of doing something ef86 based, as i have a few of them laying around. Maybe something inspired by a dr.z z-28 (which i really liked when i had one)

Tried the spitfire pre, didn't really work for me.

I think I need to switch from Cathode bias to fixed to get rid of all the tweedyness.

Funny enough, looking through Weber's site, the 6a20x2 (double deluxe blackface) uses the same OT so i am going to rebuild, based on the blackface deluxe normal channel (as a starting point) I won't have trem or verb, so there should be enough room physically, and the PT shouldn't have any issues since i am not changing the tube count.

All this being said, I CAN'T WAIT for my "real" project, a blackface basec princeton "high power" since i should finally have enough room in the chassis to get things done. a double deluxe in a normal 5e3 chassis is a damn tight fit!

Grrrrrrrr.

Have to rework my layout, not enough room on the board for the bias circuit.

NEED BIGGER CHASSIS OR SMALLER PROJECT!
