anderton tube sound fuzz

ok.so i built the tube sound fuzz. i checked my wiring and values 10 or 20 times, fired it up and nothing. true bypass works but the effect just farts. literally.the first board was etched so i rebuilt it, using breadboard this time, same result. i checked my connections, wiring and grounds. still just farting on me.this should be a simple project(this is the original version) straight from the book. i am using 2 fivepf caps in parallel for the 10pf caps. i don't know if this would cause the problem. but i was wondering if anyone had any sound advice for this very frustrating no-goer? thanks.

does your chip (4049, IIRC) say: "UBE" as a suffix on it?

no. it does not. should it?

yes: it`s essential!
that "U" in the "UBE" stands for: "un-buffered";
only a version with "U" in the suffix can operate linearly,
as is neccessary in this circuit.

The others only are able to work like Schmitt-triggers (digitally).

where can i find this 4049 ube? any ideas? ive looked through mouser but they only stock buffers.thanks for the heads up by the way.i have been racking my brain over this for a week, checking and rechecking. any help is great. thanks.

My guess is that most places that sell CMOS chips in abundance WILL carry the unbuffered version, but one does need to specify it.

You can always try Small Bear Electronics. This is a parts distributor that started up as a cottage business to provide parts to pedal builders. The only kind of 4049 that Steve Daniels will carry WILL be the unbuffered variety.

Like everyone previously said, make sure you get the unbuffered 4049 part (CD4049UB). The buffered part has three inverters in a row which won't work as a analog circuit. If you can't get the unbuffered version, you can use a CD4007 instead and wire up the sources/drains yourself. I actually prefer the 4007 because on two of the buffer circuits, the drains can be wired to each other through two small resistors which will dampen the tendency to self-oscillate (which those 10pf caps are trying to prevent).

thanks all for your replies. from what i know i thought the cd4007 was a 14 pin mosfet? if i remember right... how can i modify the circuit to fit the cd4007ube chip into the existing tube sound fuzz with the 4049. i know you have explained this but i need a little instruction to get it right. thanks.

Page 3 will show you how to connect the pins so that you get the same type of inverters as a CD4049UB. This is not a plug in replacement. You will have to wire up another socket and plug those wires into your breadboard. The socket will be hanging above the board, but really it's the sound that matters, not the looks.
