Question for winders about tension

I hear a lot of people talk about using varying tensions on a single wind. My question is this: It seems to me that if you start out with a looser wind then go to a tighter wind it would make the wire sink between the last few layers and cause them to spread and make the shape of the coil all whack, at least it has for me when I tried it. Are you guys using extreme differences in tension when you do this or subtle changes? I would think one would need to start with tighter tension then go looser would be the best, but I dont do this a lot so I just dont know and am only trying to serve my curiosity. Thanks

I just get hold of the wire between finger and thumb. I try to maintain a consistent tension but vary the speed of wind quite a bit. This will have an effect on tension. Sloppy winds can be tidied up last minute.

That's pretty much what I do also, except I try to keep the speed pretty even... but might slow it down near the end of the wind.

More finger & thumb here. Which means it's impossible to keep the tension exactly the same throughout the wind, which even if you could, it would still vary when you change speeds on the winder. Unless you're alternating between ridiculous extremes, like a stranglehold (short of breaking the wire) one moment and then almost totally loose the next, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep it fairly consistent.

Finger and thumb here too , I try to keep the speed constant , although sometimes the drill has a mind of it's own , I try to go a bit looser gradually but who TF knows if it does ? don't want to end up with loose wire on the last winds but in general it seems to be reliable for me and is supposedly how a coil is wound correctly ?, thats from a coil winding machinery site so maybe they are pushing something their machine does that others don't so don't know about that one , If I find the link Ben I'll forward it to you .

I do find that sometimes the wire goes mental , you lose sight of it because it flicks around so fast , makes a noise too ? scared me shitless first time it happened .

Hi all, I had a revelation last night myself. I was walking around at the store and thought about how the coil get larger near the middle to end, which means the winds get longer and wondered if the tension should be a little less due to the wire spread?? Shit like this pops in my head at the strangest places, and never have anything to write it down with
