6V6s

My stash of Visseaux and Mazda 6V6s is waning thin. Each have now developed annoying buzzing too some degree or another when played at high volumes. Some are worse than others. Those specimens also rattle when given a gentle shake. On one of them the base is trying to separate from the rest of the tube. They still play nicely at lower volumes but they are clearly on their way out. I don't see Visseaux or Mazda around much, and I only have two decent RCAs left.

The Ruby I have from a few years ago works but just sounds so sterile to me. Same with the older Sovtek. Maybe the same tube? Dunno. Either way, almost useless to me. I think that's all I have tried.

For those of you who like the tone of the Visseaux and Mazda tubes in VC AA764 or Princeton 5F2A circuits, what are you using now? I will also be interested in this for a Deluxe (hopefully soon!). Any reliable sources for these French tubes? I think I got my last ones from NBS several years back. Maybe I should try him again.

Thanks,

Barry

If you got to wiwitubes.com he has the Mazda 6V6's.I think you would be happier with just about any NOS (RCA,GE,Tung-Sol etc) than the Sovtek or Ruby or any of the current production Russian or Chinese tubes.

You don't mention that you've tried the 6V6EH (my standard tube), the JJ 6V6 or the Tung-Sol "reissue" (best-sounding of the 3, but pricier than the EH).

Won't cost much to try a pair of any of them, and you will probably like them much better than the horrible old Chinese or Sovtek black glass ones.

No, I have not tried any non-NOS tube since the older Sovtek and Ruby, both of which stunk very badly.

I have read reasonably good things about some of the newer 6V6s since I posted. Maybe for the price it is as you point out worth a try before paying (too much probably) for the 6V6s I am used to.

Thanks,

Barry
