Wow! 89 aint bad. I was surprised to see this because I thought he must already be gone. I mean, every other musician from that era (and the one after that) is. But lets give respect where it's deserved. The guy was a hit machine with a long career in a tough industry. He will be remembered.

Chuck already said everything I was thinking.

On a side note, I watched the video and wondered, "How many takes did they need to get all the white people to clap on 2 and 4?".

There was a lot more going on with fats than his hits, too.

I thought he had already passed, but then I found Gary US Bonds was still around too.

I didn't know he was so young when he had his hits in the 50's.

I was gonna just pick 'B' for all my answers, but choked at Aretha and couldn't bring myself to call her dead. Still missed quite a few. Frankie Valli? Seriously?

The quiz says that Ray Charles died in 1974

I got about half way through, and got tired of flipping pages. I missed a couple. I had no idea what status to give Neil Sedaka. When it said only 25 more to go, I quit.

I thought the same thing -- 89 sure ain't bad. I'm thinking that's really pretty good for someone who had the nickname "Fats", because a lot of people get taken by heart disease at a much younger age. 89 ... this gives me hope...

    Now THAT is funny!

But it's not like they were even able to get them *ALL* to clap on 2 and 4!

The ones who have no rhythm, like the blonde girl in the polka-dot dress, weren't able to clap on 2 and 4 -- she just snapped her fingers to every beat. She couldn't even move her feet to the beat, she just sort of snapped and staggered at 0:45 and just snapped at 1:20.

That post came from an actual story of mine.

Several years back, playing a gig at a lake club (predominantly white folk), the patrons were having a little trouble clapping along with the song we were playing. As a joke, I said, "Just the white people". After the words spilled from my mouth, I remembered that there was a table of African American people sitting up front on my side of the stage. I was momentarily horrified and thought they would take the wrong meaning. I glanced over at the table and they were all laughing their asses off. Luckily for me, they totally got the joke.

I don't know why your story made me think of this, maybe its the old-school R&B connection in this thread.

The barber shop theme in that Eddie Murphy sketch reminded me of this --

Why is it that white people can't dance? They need to hear an electric guitar.

    Ok... More derailing

I did an interior paint job for a lady who was missing a leg. Myself and three other guys on the job, of course, wondered why. Rather than pussyfoot around the elephant in the room (which is actually offensive to some handicapped people when done badly) I decided to clever and charm my way in. One early morning she was out front gardening. She was dressed in black sweats and wearing a black beanie, tucked in behind some bushes under the kitchen window (which was near the from door where I was passing through). I said "Damn! I was about to go in and tell you that a one legged burglar was outside your house! But then I thought, what are the odds?" She laughed freely and naturally... Humor is the way. But it had better be funny or it $h!ts the bed fast.
