| Please, about Memorial Day
Hi, (I'm not american though I have friends and native close relatives over there) just curious and without any hidden 'second' intention in my question: Where did this celebration begin, in the north side I guess, but has it been or is it now a ceremony supported by both parties in that ancient fight? Just to compare with other parts of the world. Thanks, JC |

Memorial day was established shortly after the American Civil War (War between the states, or War of Northern Aggression). It is to mark and remember the contribution of all American war dead.

I see. So this confirms to me that after if we're lucky and manage to get is forgiven no matter how horrible fact it was.But if we don't, then was a naughty thing. It wonders me how thin is the line that separates liberation from slaughter. Funny thing is human history. |

Memorial Day doesn't take a side on a war or issue, it honors the men and women who gave their lives fighting in the service of the country. It isn't about whenther we won or lost, nor is it about whether the war was "right" or "wrong." I, and many others, feel the war we waged in Viet Nem was wrong, but that has nothing to do with the poor soldiers who died there. They didn't start the war, and they didn't decide where they were to be deployed. World War 2 was maybe a little easier to figure out. I think the Iraq war is a crime. But all that is a separate issue from the dead soldiers. When my neighbor's son comes back from that war in a casket, I grieve for them nonetheless. A soldier stands ready to do whatever his country tells him to do. We honor those who lost their lives in so doing. Memorial Day is about the soldiers themselves, not about the country or its politics. |
