what magnets can i use???

i was wondering if when making a humbucker do you hvae to use the alnico bar magnets(which i am discovering are hard to find in my city) or could i use a different kind of magnet, i was thinking that that the magnetic strips thet you can cut to length(like you find on the back of fridge magnets) would be suitable, but then again ive never made a pickup before!
thanks
