6N2P-EV Tubes

Has any one tried these Russian 6N2P-EV tubes, supposedly a 12AX7 type tube .... they are consistently inexpensive but they might sound like, well, crap smells.
It looks like they run on 6vac from lugs 4 to 5 so it would be super simple to rewire the sockets for them... etc etc..

Those tubes were used in some Red Bear amps - late 80's/early 90's. They are very similar to a 12AX7. And yes, it's a quick re-wire:

Bruce , I don't know if Le Basseur will chime in but here is his answer from 2005:

Hope he doesn't mind:

Subject: Re: Has anyone tried 6N2Pi-EBs?

Yes,I tried them along time ago and I currently use them as a 12AX7 economy replacement but not only...
I put them in a wide variety of stages, except some early stage's hi-gain amps because there are too noisy. The results are satisfactory in Fender,Marshalls, you name it...whereas the owner requires a somewhat "cleaner" amp.The point is that,AFAIK,the Russian clone does not have the 12AX7's Mu of 100 but slightly lower.
The -EB series means "Export-Vojna" ("Export-Military" and has a more ruggedised internal construction than the average 6N2Pi:mica spacers of a better quality,Nomex glass,a third reinforcement mica spacer on top, twisted filament, shiny metallised anodes. But maybe the major plus is that, being -EB,their life expectance is far more than any average 12AX7....maybe in the those fancy Telefunken ECC803S' category (10,000 hours or more).
Some original, older Russian textbooks say that for some -EB series,a life expectancy is in the 5,000 hours ballpark AT THE MAXIMUM PARAMETRES,but,if my memory serves me correctly,I fitted a bunch of amps with those 7-8 years ago and no one returned so far, though I'm sure those amps passed the 5,000 hrs border.
For what they cost,I think they're worth a try!
HTH,
Le Basseur
Hope this helps a bit!

I use the El84 type 6P14P and am very happy with them.

Thanks for the replies.
I was thinking for a new build they ought to be fine... but I'd still worry that a casual tweaker would yank one out and stick in a 12AX7 or equiv, resulting in a dead amp.
But at such a low price, if I were a tube amp home brewer, I'd be using them in all kinds of amps where the tube is not a critical function or tone device.

I would like to remind you one more time that the filament voltage is 6.3V
As far as I know because of it's specific tone russians don't like it very much and prefer 12AX7EH instead.

I thought those are the original Russian version of Sovtek 12AX7WA (rebased, center tap added, shield between sections disconnected). (Possibly it was a popular tube in the Eastern block for general purpose hi gain mini triodes. I have an old Tesla which I think is the same.) What would you need to do to make them sound good? Higher plate load R and bias differently? WAs seemed to be weak sounding and not really very good when straight subbed in an AX7 slot. If you accidentally plugged one into a 6.3V-wired 12AX7 socket by mistake(seems more likely than the other way around), would there be damage? Seems like it just would not turn on (only one side of heater in circuit). Or would there be when B+ was applied?

Hello, Folk!

Bruce, many russian sellers offer 6N2P / 6N2P-EV as 12AX7 equiv.

But 6N2P-EV - Low frequency hi-durable, long-life double triode with high gain, functional analogue 6N9S. Analogue of 12AX7 (but not compatible to the electric socket).

So, if you want use this tube, you need crash and built adain your device ) Honestly say - 6N2 - sounds better in high as 12AX7.

Unhappy How to rewire for 6N2P

I just got 6 of these tubes to substitute for a 12AX7's and am wondering how I have to rewire the socket so the tube will work. I've tried them and they don't heat up at all.

Heaters to pins 4 and 5, pin 9 is a screen that is usually grounded to the chassis.

thanks

thank you very much, this will save me returning the tubes and fighting over whether they are bad or not. my tester says they are bad but i'm using the 12ATX7 setting.

They have the same pinout as a 6AQ8, 6DJ8, 6GA8, 6BQ7A etc.

This was Bruce's original question at the top of the thread.

18 months later . Can anyone comment on these tubes from his own experience ?

I still like the russian pentode 6P14P very much.
