What has happened to the ampwares site

everytime I try to go to get some scheme from the Fender Amp Field Guide today , I get redirected to some place saying that "ampwares.com expired on 08/09/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion"

Oh Dearie me!

I have a bunch of schemes I got previously from the site (but not all of them unfortunately) if anyone is interested, you can email me to see if I have got it.

It sounds like Mark forgot to renew his site name registration. Hopefully no one else will grab the name before he gets paid up. And hopefully it is nothing more serious than that!

I snagged the whole site about a month ago (really glad I did!) I have the whole site on my hard drive, and since it looks like ampwares is dead, the content is now backed up to another hd.

I am working on getting hosting so that I can get it back out there. But! there are some things that are branded with ampwares.com and I don't want legal action so I am going to leave those out. Those are mostly scanned user manuals, etc. If anyone contests my putting schemos or amp facts out on the web, I'll laugh at them. Can you say common knowledge? I don't foresee anyone taking action against me, but if anyone knows differently then please let me know.

My plan is to put the site out there as close to its current format as possible. Ultimately, though, I want to fix the stupid thing so that it looks like a web site from this century. I develop web sites for a living, and I can't have my name on that rambling piece of crap. The content is nice, but the site sucks.

Short term, if you want any schemos or whatever from ampwares, I have them all. I will gladly send you anything you want, just PM me with your eMail addy and what you want. I'll make every effort to send you stuff as quickly as possible, just please understand I have a job, a family, and a lot of other things to do not to even mention playing guitar and building amps.

I am just trying to find cheap hosting. Meanwhile, what is the FFG missing?

Here are my ideas:

I'd like to be able to search by circuit number. I'd also like to view amps a few different ways such as by model, line (as in tweed, brown, etc) and maybe year. The old FFG just allowed you to browse by model.

I think it's also missing sound clips. How cool would it be to be able to *hear* the amps? I am wondering how much interest there would be in something like that? Also, how much interest there would be in contributing said clips? I'd like to have clips that are about a minute or less, that give good descriptive metadata like "Strat with neck pickup, amp volume on 8, guitar volume full on".

Are there any features anyone else thinks would be nice to have in the site? I am not going to do a forum, since I am perfectly happy with this site. But anything else? I don't want to get carried away, since I do want to just get it back out there. But at the same time, and while I justify the cost of hosting, it's nice to have at least a wishlist.

Sound bytes - you might have trouble tracking down clips of the originals - nice idea tho'.

On what was missing I have no idea, but I found two indexes in relation to the FFG that seemed to not have consistently the same scheme links on them (Don't know if these work at the mo' or not). Maybe you can spot where they are? I know the 5G9 isn't of the top one

well, since the FFG is back online, I'll save my cash and time for my next amp project. Meanwhile, the FFG sits on a hard drive, waiting, just in case...

Well, maybe you can go ahead and start your own FFG/Ampwares site. If you delivered the merchandise promptly, there is no judge on earth who would convict you of plagiarism...

Yeah, it's laughable for someone to accuse me of "plagiarizing" a website that consisted of a bunch of photos culled from elsewhere on the web, schematics and board layouts designed by a private enterprise, and facts about the various amps made by said enterprise. If they didn't jump on the original FFG then they can't jump on me. If the photo owners want to pursue me, I'll gladly remove the offending photo. Most people have lives, though.

Oh, and by the way...I am working on my version as we speak. I have hosting, some generously provided this for me.

On my version of the site, I plan to host sound clips. So if you have some clips, I'll gladly put them out there. That's the one thing I always felt was missing from the FFG.

Fender used to issue a collection of schematics and other tech materials to the service centers on CD-ROM every so often. The list of schematics you posted above is pretty much just the table of contents to those discs. FInd any Fender serive shop that has been around more than 4-5 years and they probably have one of those discs. SO even in the absence of an ampwares site, the collected materials are still around and available. Most of it anyway.

My joke about plagiarism was in reference to the AMPWARES part of the site, not the FFG... ("Delivering the merchandise promptly" was not one of AMPWARE's strong points... )

About 10 years ago I had exchanged some emails with Mark about Fender schematics, offering to send him some of the new ones to add to his site. He said he pretty much wanted to stick to the old ones, up through the 70's so as to not get in trouble with Fender. At that time, Fender had no schematics on their US site but there were some new ones on one of their European sites.

I already have all of the schematics from FFG on my hard drive so I was more interested in the other information about the specific models. I thought it was cool how Mark incorporated all of that stuff on his site- probably more comprehensive than many of the books on the subject.

So those CD-ROMs had the old schematics and layout drawings from the old amps (50's through 70's)? Like from the Pittman book? I thought that many of the FFG scans were pretty crappy...

Thanks

I thought the FFg was cool too. And if you want to resurrect a new improved version cminor9, I think that would be cool too, and I, for one, will be glad to make use of it. :-)

Yep, working on it. It's getting there. I just wrote a script to scrape all the content into my database...aw, you don't care about that geek stuff.

I am working on it. Want to include sound clips and it is extensible so that other manufacturers can be included. Why limit it to Fenders?

I'll let you all know when its done. It's about 50% done now, then I need to test it. One that happens, it's getting launched.

Great idea. I am building the site so that it's flexible and these could be added to the photos section. If you have some, send them my way. I'll put them on there.

Each page is going to have a datasheet first, then a media section with photos, schematics, and sounds. The cab plans could go in the photos section. Or maybe even with the schematics.

HI all,
I am new to this forum, just found this thread, tried to access your new site but get this message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: strripos() in /home2/redbeart/public_html/ampedia/inc/security.php on line 36

Wonder if it is up at a different location?

Thanks,

Yeah, I know its borked...but fortunately nobody hacked the site. I am in the midst of switching web hosts and I cannot get into my database for some odd reason. Since no database = no site, then best I can do it put out a message explaining the problem (which I haven't done obviously.) I'll try again tonight and see if I can't get it working. Sorry for the inconvenience. Besides, you'd have to get up pretty early in the morning to hack my site, since it is built correctly

Ok, the Ampedia is back. http://ampedia.redbeartrading.com, as usual. We've moved servers. Before, page loads took too long. That problem should be corrected now. We are up and hopefully to stay for a very long time.
