  • My new JTM45 clone

    Hi folks

    I just completed a this new JTM45 clone. It is not a kit, I bought my parts all around (end up expensive, about $1,100.00) but I'm proud of the results, good tone :-) I still have to build the head and the speakers cabinet.
    I'm planning for a 2 X12 cab with greenback Celestion.

    Audio circuit = Allen Bradley NOS carbon comp resistors
    Power circuit = Takman - REX 1 Watt Carbon film (2 %) tolerance from Parts Connexion
    Capacitors = Mullard/Philips NOS
    Capacitors Bias circuit = Sprague Premium
    Choke = Mercury Magnetic USA
    Transformers = Magnetic components USA
    Sozo 0.047uF 400V capacitor and 100K 2 Watts kiwame resistor on Standby Switch (very silent switching)
    UK Cliff input and output jack
    CTS potentiometers
    Larry goounding schem
    Hand made Paxolin dark brown circuit board, turreted
    Metro-Amp aluminium chassis (polish)
    Weber 25K bias Potentiometer
    Ceriatone plexi front panel - Hand made rear plexi panel
    v1 = Mullard Blackburn factory UK 12AX7 NOS
    v2 & v3 = Mullard 12AX7 RI
    v4 & v5 = Valve Art KT66
    v6 = GZ34 Blackburn factory UK Mullard NOS (label G.E.B.)

    Totally Sweet!

    Can I safely assume it sounds as beautiful as it looks?

      YES :-)

      Hello, thank for the comments, and yes it sound very good, I had a chance yesterday to try it with a 4 X 12 Marshall close cabinet with greenback and in a Avatar 2 X 12 also with Celestion speakers, awesome vintage tone in both cab.

      I'm not a amp teck or amp guru, just a passionate hobbyist and to my big surprise the amp run without any issues right from the first start-up.

      The only draw back I can see is the amp need to be crank high (over 5-6 on the volume) to deliver the nice Marshall crunch we expect. Bellow five, it's very clean (a la Fender).

            Hello,

            Very nice and clean build.

            Many have found that Powerscaling by LondonPower.com or VVR, which is another form of powerscaling to work well with being able to achieve the cranked tone at low volumes.

              Well, I like your suggestion. To be honnest with you, right now this JTM45 is useless for me. I'm considering selling this amp (at cost price for a rapid sale) to finance the construction of a one watter amp that I will be able to crank to reach the distorted sound I'm after ( I hate pedals). I had a chance to try the amp at a friend house basement with a 2 X 12 Avatar cab and into a 4 X 12 Marshall with Greenback at maximum level and the tone was superb with awesome vintage crunch. But living in a condo type of residency I can never crank the amp. As far as ''clean'' tone I already have a Vibrolux and a Vibroverb amp that give me very very good clean tone, maybe a bit better than the Marshall. I did listen to Epiphone Junior amp mod with Mercury Magnetic transformers and tone stack on You Tube and I'm jalous of their tone at low level. So I think that I'm going to sell this amp.

                Hello,

                I understand not wanting to have an amp that you can't use, but... The powerscaling options can get you well below 1 watt, you can read more on powerscaling.com and londonpower.com. It would allow you to keep your amp and have the flexibility of turning up the actual volume if you ever need it. You definitely seem to have the necessary skills to install a kit.
                Playing clean and loud is where you run into difficulty, playing distortion you could probably get by with a 10W easily playing most venues, playing at home less than 1 watt.
                Even 1 watt into a 4x12 cab can be pretty loud!

                  He, I just add a Lar/Mar PPIMV, work fine, but the tone seems to be a bit cold to my ears and taste, but I did not use it for more than five minutes so far, I'm working on my 2 X 12 speaker cabinet, I'm adding ports on the baffle to give some ''air'' in. Fine tuning of the voicing of the cab to suit better the Marshall style tone.

                    This is a beautiful build, Jean. You got all the vintage parts as well, the mustard caps and all. This is a very unique piece, if and when you sell it at cost price the buyer will have been very lucky indeed.

                    Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
