  • New +100w amp ideas... LAP STEEL amp

I have a national, pro player (almost fully sponsored, but not with the right amp yet)... who is looking for a great sounding, deep and fat, not shrill, all vacuum tube, lap steel guitar amp. He is NOT your typical country rock guy either... this is hard core. I'll let you in later.
I'm curious what some of you guys think might fit the bill...
He is a great player and is out with the right guys and now, using a solid state 200 watt amp and a 4x12 bottom and or a 2x15 bottom
I have my ideas but I am always open to better ones.

Well, A great big tube amp isn't hard to design. But what kind of features do we want??? Master vol, high gain type thing, channel switching, effects loop, stereo? I don't even know the stability and gain characteristics of lap steel pickups. Unless he's using normal guitars for this? His cabinet choices seem alright from what I know from your post. I do know that note separation seems real important to the lap steel guys, what with sliding whole chords and all. So a real tight power supply with big low impedance caps, an overrated PT and OT seem like obvious starters for this kind of design.

When you say "hard core" do you mean to say this is metal rock played on lap steel?

Bruce, you kinda swung the door open without giving much info to go on. Depending on the stage volume the band plays at, a 100W amp may be overkill. If overdriven tones are important, the amp could be too loud to allow a good mix out front. At the other end of the spectrum, a 5E3 could work with enough PA and monitor support.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.

OK, I have closed the deal.... so, basically it will be two amps this time. One 100 watt head and 4x12 bottom and one 35-45 watt combo with 1x12 or 2x12s.
This is a big venue type amp thing... live, small amps won't really cut it for him.
I need to get the line together by the January NAMM show.

I've played behind him a couple times myself but I can't see myself on the road anymore.
I think he'll be using E. Johnson's drummer for his next outing.

He's been working with some heavy hitters and just got off the road with David Allen Coe and has been doing a bunch of stuff with others and is looking for a signature lap steel amp line.
It is kinda like Jimmy Hendrix on lap steel.
So he wants it all.... ha ha
