Are NTC thermistors safe, always in the circuit?

The installation must be firm, solid, and well-insulated. I've installed some CL60s in 50-watt amps, and I don't recall them reaching that temperature (I measured it by touch immediately after turning it off). Next time I open one, I'll measure it with a thermometer.

The CL-60 has a 5A max rating, so your mains current should preferably be above 1.5A - what mains current are you idling at ? Measuring the temp of a small part is perhaps best done with an IR temp meter.
