  • Peavey Classic 50, no lead channel

Peavey Classic 50 always in normal. When switched to lead normal still controls output. Same issue with footswitch attached and switch in lead.
I'm an electronics tech but not an amp tech.
Checked channel switch at J5, OK. Circuit runs thru footswitch jack. Jumpered J23 1-5 which should remove jack from cuicut. Checked fuses F3-F4 so I should be getting the -27vdc to the coil of K1. Now suspect relay K1 itself which switches audio to lead channel. The trace aroud the K1 coil is on the backside of the board so a lot of work to get to it. Anyone seen this failure or have any suggestions?

You don't have to get at the relay pins to see if voltage is present on it. Ground your meter to chassis and probe R30. Got -27v or something close there? How about at the end of channel switch at J3? For that matter, there is a diode across the coil, got -27 there?

When the switch is pushed, do its leads connect together? Does the -27 make it across the switch? if the -27 makes it across the switch, the other side of hte switch does NOT have a path to ground. If the far side of the switch is indeed grounded, then the -27 should be flowing through the relay coil.

Jumpering 1-5 on J23 ONLY takes the jack out of the circuit IF BOTH CUTOUT CONTACTS ARE GOOD AND THE SOLDER INTACT ON THE JACK BOARD. Is ther zero ohms or close to it from the switch to chassis? Don't assume.

Did you actually jumper at J23? or at the maybe more convenient J33? Jumper 1-3 on J33 and I would be more willing to accept the results.

Ground a wire to chassis. with the other end, probe R30. Does the relay pull in?
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Jumpered R30 to ground, lead channel works, it's a miracle!!!!
Jimpered J23-1 to ground, OK. Jumpered J23-5 to ground, not OK.
Must be the footswitch jack uh??
This was a brand new amp damaged in shipping, bought for pennies on the dollar. The electronics cabinet broke loose from the speaker cabinet on the end the footswitch and effects jacks are on. Only real damage was to the back panel and the screws from the top that hold the electronics cabinet. A trip to the hardware store fixed that and a new back panel will make the amp as good as new. This was the only fuctional damage I could find. Thanks for the refresher course in troubleshooting. You CAN teach old dogs new tricks(again).

        Ding, Ding, Ding
Two broken legs on J10, found while looking for broken solder joints or lifted pads.
        Thanks again,
