  • No sound from speaker..?

I have an Eminence Delta 12 here, and I thought it would probably sound better in my guitar combo than the one that's in there. Both speakers are 8ohms.

When I hook up this speaker though, there is no sound at all. I've had ripped cones or just speakers that sound crackly for no obvious reason, but never one that does nothing so this is new to me. I put the old speaker back in and it works fine.

I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting it since everything looks clean and like new, though the history of this speaker is unclear. Thoughts?

Update: tried it in another known working amp. Got my hopes up for a moment when I turned it on and heard the light hiss of a live speaker.. but then I realized this was a keyboard amp and the hiss was coming from the horn. The Delta is still dead silent.

It did manage to slice my finger open as I was pulling it back out though so that's something I guess.

Measure the resistance from one speaker terminal to the other. I bet the resistance is infinite, which means that the voice coil is open. Unless someone just tore a wire loose, the voice coil was probably fried by excess current.

Make that measurement with the speaker NOT connected to anything.

...and assuming the voice coil is in fact fried, then this speaker belongs in the dump? Or would it be possible/worthwhile to repair?

There was a time I reconed a lot of dead speakers, but nowdays I mostly replace them. SImply put, compare the cost of a new one with the price of a recone job.
