  • Crate Turbo Valve 120-Loss of sound

    Hi Amp geniuses,
    Here's my problem-
At a recent gig in a crappy small town bar,My Tv-120 stopped playing.
We were in the middle of a song (No problems or symptoms prier)
    And it just stopped playing.
2 things that may have contributed-
1-I guess they have wiring problems at this bar
    2-It was storming pretty fierce.
Yes i know pretty dumb on my part.
    Here's what it's doing now....
It turns on,but no sound at all(Main Fuse ok)
    only 2 of the 4 EL34's glow
I pulled it apart to check fuses(2-250mA fuses blown)
I am going to replace these fuses and hope it works.
Is there something more i can check if not?
I have limited funds at the moment and am not great with electronics (So please give simple advice?)
    Thank you

    Welcome to the place.

If the fuses blew, then it could mean that the output tubes are damaged, or it may have just been a line surge that caused them to blow.

Remove all of the power tubes, replace the blown fuses and power up the amp. Do the fuses hold? Shut off the power, insert the two power tubes that light up and try again. Do the fuses still hold? Does the amp make sound now? Finally if all is well so far, add the other output tubes and go again. Do the fuses hold?

Will it work with only 2 tubes? I thought since they were matched that you had to use all 4?

You are only testing to see if the amp will turn on without blowing the new fuses. If the fuses blow after you install two of the tubes, you can assume that one of the two tubes you just installed is bad and caused the fuses to blow. If the first two tubes do not cause the fuse to blow, you can then install the second set to see if one of them causes the fuse to blow.

Install either the two outside tubes or the two inside tubes, not the two right or two left.

Matched power tubes are sold that way so that all four tubes work the same and evenly share the work load of the power amp. The amp itself will operate with 4 unmatched tubes or 2 tubes for that matter.

So i replaced the fuses, and all is well(It would seem)
I followed what you said.Fuses held. But it seems like only 2 of the tubes are glowing.Maybe they come on that way?
It was 2 on the right side(Looking at it from the back) Not outside/inside tubes. Going to take it and have a repair guy check my tube status tomarrow
          Thank you

hey......i would leave nothing to chance...replace tubes...check bias lines to see if bias is correct.check plate resistors, sounds like old tubes cherrying (glowing red) or redplating....if you are not sure bring to a tech as currents inside amp are lethal!

            peace......................mike
