  • Fender Bassman SP3100 acting weird (again :P ) Cap problems?

    Same amp, different weirdness!

After soldering in the new filter caps in the power amp section, the whole thing sounded just like it did before. I decided to clean it inside-out but when I finally assembled it to listen to it, it started to do some weird stuff:

When I turn it on, it pops as it has always done, but then immediately it stops (so the filter caps still work, I put them in correctly. ) so I start to play, and for about 3-4 seconds it sounds ok. But after it, it acts like it's going dead, just like a battery. I tried to rebuild the whole circuit as it is on the original schem (it was tampered with by its previous owner, but it was good that way, so I didn't bother it) but it does exactly the same. Also, if I connect two trails (while it's on) it "charges up" again, and for a few seconds it sounds good, but then it dies again.

I tried to leave out the boost and switch sections and it sounds OK that way, but without EQ and channel selection... So the problem is there, as it seems.

I think (maybe I'm wrong) it's some kind of capacitor problem (they are really old) so I have decided to change them.

The other problem is that I don't know what kind of caps these are (and I would like to change them as close to the original as possible). I mean I haven't seen this kinds ever. (I will upload some pictures tomorrow!) I can see a few tropical fishes, and ceramics, they are OK, but there are four white Mallory axial types, with big MALLORY written on them (two polarized and two nps) and also I have lots of black "containers", big ones with only the values on them. These two types freak me out.

So what do you think? (I'll upload the pictures as soon as I can!)

You can test the film caps but they're probably fine. You will want to replace the bias supply filters and preamp cathode bypass caps for certain. After that I'll say it's a tube problem ot dirty tube pins or sockets. For we who aren't familiar with the amps history, what is it?

ChuckH - solid state amp. no cathode bypass caps in this one.
