Guitar might be breaking preamps..?

Perhaps the OP IS using some common piece of gear that isn't mentioned. Like a tuner or noise gate. Or perhaps both his guitars have active pickups and the batteries are dying. Or perhaps the equipement is being operated improperly. (had to offer some "buffer" pretext before the closing suggestion )
