I've held a selection of matched pairs of BJTs to replace failed transistors in differential input stages, and always replaced the pair when one goes. Do people still bother, or just replace the one that's gone and hope that the tolerances in modern manufacturing are 'close enough'?
Matching transistor pairs for ladder filters tells me that there's still a fair variation, even amongst the same production batch.
