You must use what the original amp has, in this case TO3 metallic power transistors.

As of the VS100, I very much doubt they use TIP42 and TIP47 as power transistors.

Maybe he meant TIP142 and TIP147 Darlingtons.

Those are Darlington transistors, two transistors in a single case and will not be a good substitute for the original outputs.

Funny thing is, TIP42 and TIP47 *do* exist, and in fact are quite popular, so I took that at face value

If you have a large enough heat sink you do not have to uses TO-3 package. You just drill holes for the mounting screw(s) make sure you use the proper insulators and heat sink compound if needed, and bend the leads up like binding post to accept jumper wires from the respective connection points. It can usually be done very cleanly. Some stereo manufactures used to have us do this when the original TO-3s were suddenly not available.

the standel has a large heatsink with alot of room. it was made for 4 output. there are extra T03 holes. I know how to mount transistors to heatsinks correctly.

Which amp are we talking about here? Those transistors are fine replacements for the Marshall bdv transistors. They will not work for the Standel.
