  • Crate GT212 Blowing Fuses

Hi, lurking for awhile, great site. I got a new Crate GT212 (and please don't flame the amp, i just need help) from Zzounds this past wednesday. UPS delivered, no damage to box, packing etc. I unpack, plug in, turn on, and the power lights come on, then in about 3-5 seconds it blows the fuse?? If it is an easy fix i really don't want to go to the hassle of sending it back, but i will since it is covered. i put in an identical slow blow 3 amp, 250 volt...same thing. put in a "norma" 3 amp, 250 volt...blew immediately. I unplugged the spring reverb, seeing that a ground wire had come off of it and tried it again. same thing. pulled the top off and looked at the board for obvious signs of something fried (i have not a clue about electronics) didn't see anything. zzounds will be sending the return ticket on monday or tuesday but if i can get it going before then i could use it then send it back anyway. what would be my next step....going with a higher amp fuse? if i did that what would happen, would i die, would i have spontaneous combustion? ;-) any help is appreciated. No don't put in a higher value fuse. You wouldn't die of it but it would blow too as there's clearly an internal short of some sort. Also it looks like you're going to need the warranty and a higher-value fuse might invalidate it.

The ground wire off the reverb suggests transit damage. Send it back.

Fuses are not the problem, they are a symptom. Larger fuses will not prevent a fire like a proper size fuse does.

If they sent a call tag, why screw around? It is under warranty, so ANY Crate warranty center can handle it, but it shouldn't cost you anything but a little time to send it back and get a replacement.

No, it is not likely to be a simple fix. SImple for me maybe, but then this is what I do for a living. Likely as not, there is a bad output device on the board.

This is what warranties are for.

        Gt 212 no-output (speaker)

I am currently working on a Crate GT 212 for a customer. The issue the Amp will play for a while then shuts off (all lights are on) no sound, no fuses blown. Just about through checking all the diodes and transistors all IC's are new including the JFETS. Has anyone experienced this issue?

Hi MGR, welcome to the forum. May I suggest, for best response, start a new thread for your amp. This thread has ben dead for over two years now.

          All new JFETS???

So connect the amp to different speakers, still cut out?

There is an INSERT jack. When the sound dies, probe a plug in and our of that jack a couple times. Wake it up? For that matter, when it is working, does poking that jack cause the problem to start?

With the internal speaker still connected, does plugging an extension speaker into the SPKR jack wake it up?

ALL these jacks have internal shorting contacts, and if those contacts get dirty, then the circuit will not be complete. Squirt some cleaner down each adn probe a few times with a plug to try to clean them.

And after all that, we flip over the board, check the solder on every jack, every control, every cement power resistor.
