  • Pace MBT-100 heater

So... my trusty MBT-100's little heater element gave up the ghost tonight.

I expect the local supplier (well, local being Detroit) can tell me for sure on Monday, but I wondered if any of you cats have been heater shopping recently.

Seems that they don't make/stock the heater unit mine uses. If memory serves, it's an SX-70 wand, but I don't even recall that with confidence.

All the heaters I saw for sale (from Techni-tool, amongst others) had five wires, two heater, one ground, two sensor. I don't mind leaving the two sense wires unterminated but I'm beginning to wonder if the heater is physically and/or electrically compatible with the wand itself, or worse yet, the power supply.

Anyone have an old school desolder station like mine and dealt with this issue recently?

    Thanks,
    -B

Is that still the same one from the shop? I am not sure that is a SX-70, but don't hold me to that. I think mine uses the SX-70, and I don't recall them being compatible.

And I don't have a heater in my spares at this point.

    Dealing with Murray-Percival?

You can always contact Pace directly and ask for assistance. Though I don't recall them selling direct, at least we could ident what you need for sure.

At TechniTool, they show items in the catalog, but try asking for assistance there as well.

I may have some documntation on that older one. I will look.

      Bill-
The MBT-100 uses the SX-55 hand piece.

The heater for it has three wires and runs on 24v. Part number is 6010-0055-P1

That is the standard heater, I think that is a 40 watt heater. They make an alternate 50 watt heater 6010-0048-P1. Or at least they did in 1989.

In the 1994 catalog, they show the SX-55A handpiece for the MBT-100, it's standard heater is now 6010-0072-P1.

I don't know if they are cross compatible or not.

If the SX-70 heater has the same mounting dimensions and uses 24v, I don't know why you couldn't use it in the absence of the real part. Leaving the sensor unused wouldn't matter. You are welcome to compare your hand piece against mine for that determination.

Since those places usually have step minimum orders, I always stock up on filters and tips when I get a heater.

I have taken to removing the tips often to prevent siezing. Haven't siezed one in a long time.

Little filters for glass tube 1309-0018-P10 10 pack or -P50 for 50 pack

2" filter disc for the vacuum line 1309-0027-P10/P25/P50 10/25/50 pack

And of course tips. 1121-0253/0254/0255 small/medium/large opening

      Hope that helps.

        Thanks 'Zo,

I ended up buying a new handpiece on Ebay. Yes, the new style heater will fit physically, and I'd have a couple useless wires.

Now I'll have a couple useless wires, and a whole thing to go with it. It was too good a deal to pass up. I knew they weren't cheap, but I didn't recall paying $100 for a heater. You can still buy a used system for a few hundred bucks.

I bought a passle of tips and filters and what not when I was using the thing at the school district. Mine doesn't get used like yours, so I still have some of that stuff left.

Thanks again for checking it out.

Ah... and now that I look, your part number got me somewhere I didn't see before. Since they're owned by APE now, they changed part numbers. The new heater number is:

        6700-0055

And is only $50. That's more like it. Me no need sensor wires.

Will my SX-70 plug into your base unit, do you know, and run? Reailizing I would not get the temp regulation the sensor provides. 6-pin circular connector.

Yes. My research reveals that the connectors and voltages are the same throughout. They make 24v and 120v heaters, and have two families of base stations to drive them.

Almost any of the wands can be driven by any of the base stations, provided that the connector fits. You lose or gain temp control and/or feedback based on what's there. I dunno what happens if you, say, hook up an SX-55 to one of those guys with the fancy readouts. Whether he'd work with no feedback at all is another story. But they confirmed that my OLD unit will happily drive an SX-70, 80, or 90 with no problem.

And yes, it's a 6 pin like yours. Don't tell me you're having trouble too? Or you just wanting a new shiny handpiece?

                hello : )

I know this is an old thread, but you guys seem to be the only ones who have said anything about this subject on the internet.

I have a sx-55 and the tip seized inside the heater. I tried to pull and twist it out but the end of fhe tip snaped off : (

So i need to buy a new heater and i wonder does the sx-70 heater really fit inside an older sx-55 handpiece? Do the wires connect eaisly?

thanks for any help : )

I don't remember compatibility, contact Pace and ask them.

Back in the day, I used to drill out seized tips or soak them in liquid wrench to be cleaned with tuner wash later. If you dick up the plating they have a tendency to corrode up.
