  • Mesa Rectoverb 50 Series 2 distorting reverb - unusual fault

The symptoms were the reverb feeding back on the note decay and excessive distortion of the reverb, even with only moderate levels of drive. Not as bad with the clean channel, but still there. At 50% the reverb was in the surf territory - uncharacteristic for this amp. The reverb tray had been padded out with foam by a previous owner, but had a plywood base screwed to the tray. No evidence of an electronic fault. This is an amp I've been assisting with remotely via text message exchanges and the foam was a clue to this being a mechanical problem and the new owner removed the foam/plywood, and the amp is now fixed. I've seen these plywood bases on Mesa amps before - most manufacturers use cardboard - but this is the first problem of this kind I've encountered.
