I have a Randall RG50TC tube combo. It has two (switchable) gain controls on the overdrive channel. I find this useless - would like one to become a boost (or solo) control. FWIW, a boost pedal does not work - apparently V1 gets slammed as it is, any increase in signal just gets compressed with no noticable change in volume.
Looking at the attached schematic, you can see both gain circuits are identical. Any ideas on how to modify the one for more boost? Or maybe replacing V1 with a lower gain tube, and in conjunction with modding one of the gain controls, get more headroom. The first half of V1 (not shown) is at the input so it would change the characteristic of the whole amp - normal and overdrive. Not that this isn't a welcomed option. Or I also thought about stealing the boost circuit from the Normal channel, and route it behind V1. Any thoughts?
