  • Peavey Classic 20 Advice

I have an old Peavey Classic 20 that I'd like to improve the sound of.
Originally, it had a high end harshness that bothered me so I replaced the stock Peavey 10" speaker (that measured 8 ohms!) with an Eminence Lil Buddy and that helped it quite a bit.
It still has a kind of boxy / honky sound that I'd like to get rid of.
Right now, it's running JJ EL84's and Mullard RI 12AX7's and the Lil Buddy.
Anyone have any suggestions for this little guy? I'd like to get more of a Marshally kind of tone for rock and blues.
    Thanks!!

Run it through a Marshall 1960 0r 1965A cab. I gig with an 18 watt clone through one or the other. A single 10 inch speaker in an open back cab is the definition of boxy.

I'm sure that's true but I'm looking for a more compact package.

Then consider a 2X12 or a 2X10 closed back cab. There's no majic bullet.

So, would you say it's the size of the cabinet or 10" speakers in general that's causing the boxiness?
          Any suggestions for tubes?
