  • Transformer Differences

A friend has made me a point to point 3 channel amp(2 preamps). After a year of back and forth modifing we are ALMOST there!! He's been using Hammond transformers. IS there really a difference in transformers and tone manipulation? Say a different brand? Also the plate voltage is 420. I mention this because I really like KT88's the head room kills!, and he thinks that there might not be enough to power them(using SED el34's). Are the HAmmonds just cheap, and would getting a namebrand tranformer with more say 450, 500 plate voltage change the tone.
    Idealy,
    1st channel- Fender preamp
2nd channel- jcm 800 stock tone preamp (which I really would like a "78 JMP preamp, which he says is the same as the 800?)
3rd channel- phase inverter mod with the 800 preamp, which I am aiming to get a more Bogner type of tone with?
The power supply is a marshall base p.s.
I am altimately thinking about getting a stronger transformer, anyone got any ideas???
The guy that has been working with me is very very cool, and is by no meants a no it all, and has a great attitude and respects my knowledge of tone. He is just starting his company up, and i really help him with the tonal variations and try to express what todays musicians are looking for without killing your pocketbook. Any advice would bee greatly apeciated.
