  • Modding a VOM into a Champ, question about transformers

    Hi Guys,

I have an old VOM single ended hi fi amp I want to convert to a tweed Champ, I wonder if you could help me determine if the transformers are up to it? Also if I could use any section of the filter cap can, it would help because the chassis is very small and it would be tough to shoehorn individual caps in there.

I see a lot of differing opinions on how much filtering should be used in this amp, from the original 8x8x16 to three 20mf caps, what's the story?

Finally, it has a 6x4 rectifier, is it ok to use it? There is no 5v rectifier tap so it's either that or SS diodes.

I've mapped out the transformers and cap can here:

I don't see anything wrong with using what you have there.
Stick with the 6v tube rectifier though.
That way the B+ will not be too high and you'll be able to keep your SE 6V6 in solid class A with high ilde current for a sweet tone.
I that is an old one, you might want to ditch that filter cap and get a modern one.
