  • SS Keyboard amp input impedance

    Hi everyone!

I would like to kindly ask for advice on this.
I recently got a Laney Linebacker KB120, an 30 something years old SS 3 channel keyboard amp with 15inch and a tweeter. I primarily play guitar, so the idea is use it as an amp modeler power amp, but also as a portable PA solution for bass, keys, vocals etc. However, the input impedance of all channels rated 6k8 ohms and input sensitivity -26dBV/50mV. With my almost zero understanding of the matter, I recon it wouldn't be ideal to plug a guitar or bass directly in that low of a impedance and should probably use a DI, pedal, or my Boss modeler as a buffer in front of the amp. Should I be weary though of overloading the input, thus damaging the amp? Should I be conservative with the levels of my modeler? It is rated 2k output impedance, -10/+4dBu nominal output level. The range on the level pot of the modeler is huge, at least if I knew where unity is on the travel? I suppose it would be better if I plug the modeler in the return of the FX loop, but there isn't quoted specs for it. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Cheers!

    Don´t worry.

Input impedance is too low for passive instruments, it will murder good tone, but using any modern pedal , say any Boss one or similar will work fine as a buffer even if set to "no effect".
A pedalboard/multieffect unit is fine too.

What you do NOT want here is a True Bypass one.

You won´t break anything, typical Keyboard signal is strong*, your pedalboard will be about the same.

You can use the Effects Return, but plugging into a channel gives you more control/flexibility.

It sounds like a great amp to run a Sushi Box preamp pedal into, at least that's what I would do.
His J C Emerald pedal is a Marshall JCM800 preamp,
Sushi Box pedals are true tube driven pedals that run on high voltage internally even with 9v to 12v going in.
Any pedal will do the job but I am partial to the Sushi ones, or if you can build your own get a PCB from C2CE.
