  • Anyone ever try 6CW5s?

I just noticed that the 6CW5 (EL86) is almost identical to the 6BQ5 aka EL84. The basing diagram is the same. Essential Characteristics says a pair class AB1 plate V 250, screen V 200, plate to plate load 3K, 25 Watts. Sure to be some nice NOS types around for reasonable bucks.
WARNING! Musical Instrument amplifiers contain lethal voltages and can retain them even when unplugged. Refer service to qualified personnel.
REMEMBER: Everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school !

These tubes have much higher screen gain and lower maximum plate & screen voltages. Most EL84 amps are already dicey for EL84 tubes in this regard. In terms of custom, new designs, they work well within their parameters, delivering very low distortion output with a low plate voltage (is that what we want in a guitar amp power tube?). 6p14p-ev are much beefier than some NOS el84 and they're at least able to survive the screen volts. However, for a custom design EL86 might not be a bad choice.
