  • What is the best 6L6 for a V4?

I'm looking at retubing a '70 ampeg V4 and am wondering what every body likes for guitar appplications.
I know bass players usually prefer the 6550's, but this guy is a guitar player.
I've heard that JJ 7027's are the way to go for this amp aren't they the same as the JJ 6L6's?
Any opinions on the Sovtek 7027's?

    Thanks,
    Marc

Thanks Stokes, but that is a bit out of the price range for my customer. angela has NOS pairs on ebay for $90...

It also appears the Sovtek 7027's are the same tube as the 6L6wxt / 6L6EH.
I'll see if I can get lucky on ebay with some other listings of old stock. If that doesn't work I'm leaning towards the JJ 6L6 or 7027....

          I bit the bullet an

put JJ 7027A's in it. They seemed to be happy and sounded good to me. I'll find out how they worked in a week or so.

I actually did consider the 6BG6's but since it was not for my personal use and cost wise they are more expensive with the adaptors, I figured I'd give the JJ's a shot.

          thanks,

          Marc

The JJ 7027A is identical to the JJ 6L6, but they charge more for the 7027 because of the additional pinouts. Either one will work in the V4, but the 6L6 will save you some $. I took a good look at the 6BG6 with adaptors, and I think they're too tall to fit a V4 head cabinet. They may work in a combo amp - VT22.

I replaced the Sylvania 7027As in my 1975 VT40 (same circuit as the V2, VT22 and V4) with SED Winged C 6L6GCs and they are great. I looked at 7027As but they were too expensive compared to the alternatives whether its NOS or current production. I considered 6550s, KT66s, KT88s and 6L6GCs but the SED Winged C 6L6GCs came up in repeated recommendations.

I modified the circuit so I can also use EL34s/6AC7s. I tried them but I liked the SED winged 6L6GCs better.

Where can you get a good deal on the SED Winged C 6L6GC?

I bought genuine (there are fakes labeled Svetlana out there) SED Winged C 6L6GCs at www.thetubestore.com. Good price, good service and knowledgeable people.
