Hi...it's been a few years since i frequented this forum, but I think I'll have a little more time now to get back to this stuff. A question then; when playing live, what audio quality do you really need? And how long and how many loops would be useful?
I was thinking of making an 8-bit, 4-channel thirty-second overdub-able loops, with a 23kHz sampling rate. Now this is a far cry from the boss RC-20xl, which brings up a few more questions. How important is it to be able to save some of your loops "indefinitely"? Is CD-quality sound really that important in a live situation, or would putting a light distortion circuit after the pedal get your harmonics back? Does anybody know what processor and memory they're using? Are they using any compression (not dynamics compression, but data compression)? Is anybody concerned that flash memory has a write/erase cycle lifetime? I know digital effects aren't talked about too much on here, but without motors and belts, and without a room filled with racks filled with BBDs, and without building some crazy device that converts the sound energy into light energy which is then stored in lots of CCDs or CMOS sensors, it seems like digital is the way to go. That's not to say the CCD route wouldn't be amazingly cool.
