Chorus causes clicking even when off...any cures?

I've had this happen with a number of chorus pedals so while it's a cheapie, thats not the problem. I'm sure you all know It's a common issue with chorus in the front of amp with overdive in the amp. Or in other words, chorus at pre distortion in the chain. It changes the frequency of the clicking with the rate knob and i hear it with the chorus off. I'm running rechargable batteries and tried alkalines with no change. I know the 95% likely answer but i figured i'd try anyways.
