  • Most expensive new Tele pickup set?

I see NEW boutique Tele pickup sets ranging from $160 to $250 from most vendors. Joe Barden tops out at $340 for a pair of Gatton T's.

Surely, there must be others out there who charge even more for their NEW Tele pickups.

    Who are they?

    Seriously.

Joe Barden was known for calling his pickups the best pickups in the whole wide world. So his must be a steal for the money.
But there must be another reason for making the most expensive pickups!

This must be the best Tele-Set in our galaxy :

There are a few reasons. Scarcity and cachet can command a high price but the best one is to exploit an old truth:

      "A ____ and his _____ are soon ______."

Geeze... tell me why these would be any better/different from the DiMarzio/Duncan rail pickups?

        That's just crazy...
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I'd like to know why Gibson thinks it should get $10,000 for some of their signature Les Pauls! As if they aren't made on the same CNC machines as the rest of the line. Same with the Fender Custom Shop... they walk down the hall and grab regular production parts and then charge more money.

It's art. Do not play it. Put it on a sculpture stand and appreciate it!

                Thread hijacking

I sorta wondered how long it would take to for this thread topic to drift.

4 posts. You slack-jawed winder monkeys did it in 4 posts.

Have you any idea how dangerous it is to piss off the Immoderator's sock puppet?

You stupid S.O.B.'s, now yer gonna get it!

The immoderator is gonna freeze this thread and delete ALL of your posts, past and future, and, ...and ....AAARRRGGHH! (gurgle)...

                Dr. Strangelove here.
My sock puppet just had a cerebral hemorrhage.

                Carry on.

The point of all this is ...

                  I troubleshot a friend's boutique pickup as
having a break far enough inside the coil
as to require a rewind, something the
OEM has priced close to $200 shipped.

I find the OEM repair pricing unsupportable.

Let's say you've got an Abigail Ybarra Strat neck CS '69.
                  It needs a rewind.
Abigail can and will do the work.
                  Is it worth the $200?

(And, NO, Ms. Ybarra had nothing to do with this one.)

So, do we also now have to raise our prices to 'keep up with the Joneses'?

Gibson even says their guitars are for collectors, and Epiphones are for players! However, it's not like it's a hand made guitar, although some of the necks are hand carved to start with.

I recently did a setup on a $10,000 Les Paul. It was a really nice guitar. I'm not sure it was worth that money though. $5,000 maybe. Guitars have gotten expensive.

When I bought my Ric 4001 new, it was about $300!

                          Two things come to mind:

                          1) Their price is very supportable -- as long as someone is willing to pay it.

                          2) Such a high rewind price might mean the winder just doesn't want to do rewinds and uses the price to scare rewind queries away.

                            ....

Those Barden type pickups are supposed to be a bitch to rewind, probably the $200 rewind price is well spent in hours to take it apart and fix...

High priced Gibsons and PRS, they are "wall furniture."

I figured that was the case.

Mojo is expensive, it would seem.

So, who makes a good set of replica Black Guard Telecaster pickups?
