Slug side for me. It sounds more open and hollow to my ears. I found overwinding the screw side can be kinda harsh on a bridge pickup and muddy on the neck given the standard orientation of the coils in each position. I believe that an overwound slug side being closer to the bridge on a neck pickup makes it less muddy for a neck pickup and visa versa for a bridge pickup.

Ok, flipping the neck pu had an effect of making the tone a little brighter and still muddy on the low strings. So I took off winds from 4.07/4.27 screw/slug to 3.7/3.9 and the mud is gone. Clear bass notes now and some more treble too. I have the cover off because the stock one is magnetic and I think that cuts some treble. I'm looking for a VOS cover to replace it.Now Trending: China has found a way to turn stupidity into money!

Also if you use covers, I've had better luck with the magnets at full charge.
Seems like you get less muddiness, & loss with good hot magnets, through the metal covers.

Thanks for sharing your experiment!
Good Luck,

But then you knew that I'm sure, didn't you Possum? having done all that "testing" you have posted about over the years. Actually surprised when I saw this post.

That's probably why He's not hanging around here anymore.
Just a thought, but He probably got tired of being attacked!
