My dad made frankenbuckers for several years. Wound at our kitchen table, and note the two rows of black oxide hex screws as pole pieces from the local hardware store :> Gotoh bobbins, stainless baseplates, 43 poly sol wire, and crudy magnets.

      Heres one in action.

...and made the guitars. Europe bought 9 guitars from us. Kee had two including a double humbucker tele with his name inlaid on the fretboard. It's one of the ugliest guitars you'll ever see.

They weren't that ugly compared to some of the stuff in the 80's.

We have an ad from Guitar World hanging up in our shop of some of the most hideous looking instruments I've ever seen! I'll have to scan it and post it here. It looked like someone just scribbled some weird shapes free hand and cut them out! Then they were in those primary colors that Kramer was doing when they still had aluminum necks.

Your new electrics are much nicer of course.

Only thing ugly about them was your dad picking some of the colours out of your kiddies paint box. Flametops were fine and they did play good. I PDI/ed all of the ones Gerard Barte imported into the uk in the 80s and 90s and found now't much wrong with them. Only catering with what the pretty boys at that time wanted. Maybe time to go again, which from the sounds of your pickup forays is what you are up to.

Gibson didn't start potting the pickup until recently... My '81 LP with Shaw humbuckers weren't potted.

That was the thing back then... the primary colors I mentioned earlier. Kramer started it I think.
