  • Heads up about Guitar Parts USA

I recently bought some rolls of 42 pe from them only to find the wire is wrapped so tight on the roll it will not feed to my pickups.
Just thought I'd give you guys a warning.

Where can I get 1/2 or 1 pound rolls of PE that will feed easily off the roll.
I get formvar from another supplier and this wire never has issues. Unfortunatley this supplier doesnt carry 42pe, just formvar.

    Thanks,

    Bryan

Stew-Mac sells 1/2 pound rolls of poly coated wire.

    It's not PE though...

      GJ wire......

Man I got two 10lb rolls of that stuff a couple years back, the stuff is the worst I've ever seen, the 43 is almost completely unusable, any tension at all on the stuff shorts the coil out, its very poorly insulated......

          trick....

There is a trick to using wire like this...its wrapped so tight that when it comes off the spool with no tension it will corkscrew and kink itself and grab in your fingers or break in a felt tensioner. I had a roll like that a long time ago. What you do it get some felt from a hobby store and wrap it around the top of the spool and tape it closed. When the wire comes off the spool it will meet friction against the felt and keep the wire straight while unraveling. You have to tape the felt closed so that the cut end of the felt is faced away from the unraveling wire or it will snag in the felt. A cheap dereeler and it worked for me....

This is the company that makes Stew Mac's winder:

I bought a couple of rolls from them, no problems yet.

Did you contact GPUSA about the problem? If so, did they offer a remedy? I had a problem with the first roll of wire I bought, and Stewmac shipped out a replacement the same day I called to complain.

Yes, GPUSA took care of me. Though I haven't used that wire in about a year now so I don't know if it was an isolated incident. But I had about 4 rolls of it that didn't flow well at all from the spools.
I've switched to Elektrisola and have not had an issue.

That's also where Stew-Mac get their wire.

                    ...

There's really no "problem" with the wire, use the technique I posted and it works fine. The only problem is you need to use some kind of dereeler, thats why they make them. The cheap felt method works perfectly and costs about $1.50 to use, try it.

You'll find it (their winder)to be a bit underpowered though as some have stated here ...Good luck man. Killer guitars too.....I've seen your work
