This will not help and is off topic. Just shocked at the price and lack of quality of he crappy Schatten winder. It resembles the quality of a cheap motorised speed boat I had as a kid.

A friend of mine and I, made a winder out of scrap parts (eg. sewing machine motor, formica base, MDF plate, reed switch off an excercise bike I think, foot speed controller, lighting and so on). The machine is solid, fast and accurate. The cost was $30 for the digital counter kit.

I do know for some, outlaying the cost of the Schatten winder was something they were willing to wear to get moving.

I'm not defending the cost of the thing, but if you made one for someone, how much would you charge in labor? That's what you are paying for there.

Labor-wise it's about what you would pay for a refret, plus the parts.

It's neatly made, and except for the speed control issue, has worked well for three years.

But I've always said they are over priced because they are not massed produced.

If I was going to do it again, I'd get a cheap hobby lathe, and make a winder from that. But at the time it was more convenient, since I had no access to a workshop.

This machine was intended for repair shops that do occasional pickup rewinds, and then it's put back on the shelf when not in use.

As soon as I fix the speed control issue, it will keep on working.

I emailed them again and got a quick reply from Les asking for me to call him. I can't fault them on customer service.

          Wal,

Sorry 'bout that, I didn't refer to your post at all (which indeed was helpful). I meant that my post was off topic and not helpful.

Well, I received my Rea winder today, as I expected it was missing some parts. I was just hoping it had the pars that I can use and yes it did. I now have a durant counter, a1/8hp DC motor with speed control and reverse controls, a traverse system. Some of these parts are going to be retrofitted onto my new winder that I built. I ended paying $150.00 for the winder.

David Schwab, You mentioned that you have a durant counter. By any chance did you get the hook up instructions with it, because it has a lot of terminals on the back of it. If you did, may I get a copy of them ?

You can get PDFs of the manuals from Durant... does your counter have one or two relays in the back?

I didn't get any info on it, and when I did find the manuals, they were for the newer counter with two relays. Mine has one... and it was missing!

I did find out what relay I needed, and I do have the pinout info... so let me know which one you have and I think I can help.

How do you like that winder? Does it work? Are there parts missing, or you have them?

David, Thank you for the pin out info. Mine is also the single relay one. Model 5882-0. First I would like to hook up power to see if it even works. It was completely unhooked from the winder when I received it. So exactly which terminal would I hook up to confirm this and what voltage ?
Yes there are parts missing. It would not function as a winder as is, but I did hook it up and the motor, speed control, and reverse function all worked. Thats all I want it for anyway. I would not have built my new winder if I only knew these existed a couple months ago. I would have bought the $100.00 harbor freight wood lathe and retrofitted the above parts to it. For $250 you would have a tail stock winder w/ forward and reverse, speed control, and quality digital counter w/ auto shut off. Not too shabby for $250.

Bill, I figured out which terminal goes to which pin on relay and where the power is. I have it in a notebook, so I'll scan it later and post it for you.

If you want to PM me your email I can send you the whole PDF for the counter. It's for the newer ones, but it's still useful.

One of my ideas was to get this lathe as a basis for a winder ($126.13):

                      David, PM sent

That lathe looks exactly like the one at harbor freight for $109.00, with the exception that one is green in color and yours is white. I think they have gret potential to make a good winder.

I haven't bought that lathe yet. But it's on my possible winder list.

I haven't been to any of the Harbor Freight stores, so maybe I'll check out that option when the time comes.

I recently bought one of these from Micro-mark to replace my broken down machine that I use to hand guide wire . These mini lathes, are a way better deal then spending $300+ on the shatten. I'll have to revisit the threads on installing a counter which shouldn't be too difficult.

                            Hello

                            First post here.

Stumbled on the site while researching pickup winding.
I was at Schatten on Friday, picked up 42/43ga wire for winding Tele PU's.
I work 10 min from there.

I got a tour sort of, it was a small place. Saw a rack full of schatten winders ready for assembly, they were smaller than I expected.

I did speak briefly with Les, seems like a nice guy, he was in the middle of a meeting so I couldn't get in depth with him.

Anyways, I just scavenged an oscillating fan for a pickup winder that I plan to make.

Look forward to reading some good threads.

                                Thanks Walcen

                                Hi guys,

The batteries just died on my dig camera, so no pics for now.

The motor came from a 16" osc fan (Ocean Breeze Ahhh), so I think I have enough power.
Not sure of the RPM but I counted the amount of turns for one revolution of the oscillating mechanism arm (225 to every 1 approx.), and when I ran it I got about 10 sec. for a full revolution, sooo 6 x 225 = 1350rpm approx.

Being my first foray into winding what is a good beginners rpm to work with?
