  • Tele PU set specs

    Okay guys,

My winder is done, my bobbins are dipped and ready but I need clarification.

Looking down onto the bridge and neck pu's:

Bridge: clockwise, pole pieces north up?
Neck: counter clockwise, pole pieces south up?

Can both be done the same way, will it matter?

What is a typical setup here, I'd hate to start out going the wrong way.

      Nice winder!

You dont actually have to wind clockwise or counter clockwise. If you are trying to make these RWRP, then you just need to swap the Start/End wires... But you are correct about the magnets.

You could do this for example

Neck - Start wire to hot lead, North up
Bridge - End Wire to Hot lead, South up.

That makes the set hum cancelling when played together.

        ....

Nice winder, very minimalist, its all you really need to get started. Vintage pickups weren't wound for hum cancelling in the middle, you get a much richer tone in my opinion by not doing them hum cancelling. Hum cancelling is relatively new from about the late 70's I think. The very earliest tele pickups were North magnet up and wound clockwise. If you do want hum cancelling, modern is usually South up on the bridge, clockwise wound, North on the neck anti-clockwise wound.

Setting aside all the vintage hype, if you want the hum cancelling thing then I would strongly suggest making the neck pickup South up and CCW wound and the bridge pickup N up an CW wound. This would at least make them somewhat compatable with the covention.

Nothing wrong with the winder. Nothing wrong with minimalist approaches. There are people out there using super duper gizmo-matrons to wind pickups and they still sound like shite.

            Good luck

Isn't the other way around? Like the SD antiquity.

                ...

All the very first Fender pickups were North polarity. It only lasted a couple years then they went to south. It only matters if you are mixing with pickups from another manufacturer. I have no idea why they changed to South....

Duncan is not the convention. He deliberately made his opposite to Fender so you had to buy a complete set.
Fender tele neck pickups have always been South up.

If you plan to stick with only 2 pickups, then what has been provided already is sound advice. If you have any plans to Nashville-ize your Tele (a 3rd pickup in the middle), then you can leave the two normal pickups the same polarity and do RWRP for the middle one.

The last turn is not flush with the bottom flange, the magnet wire will eventually break.

                              Pole direction

What are the benefits to having the pole pieces north or south up?
Will it really affect tone or efficiency of the PU?
