On covers and tonal transparency, I'm sure that even the ones that sound transparent to me have SOME effect. It's just way-way-way-WAY less than the other covers, so my pickups come out sounding the same to my ears with or without the "transparent" covers, which is more than good enough for me. To the extent they have any effect, it's easily compensated for by raising the polepieces a quarter turn.

So until I can find some transparent 49mm's, I'll make sure all my covered buckers are 50mm's.

Are the 49.5mm covers Slightly shorter in length too? Or just the puched hole spread? If they are shorter in length, maybe the metal is'nt streched as far, resulting in an ever so slight thicker cover? Just a thought. Have you gauged the 2 covers (50mm,49.5)? Habit would say......Same cover, different spacing, but you never know....

covers....
Don't forget the original purpose of humbucker covers was to PROTECT them, for all time. If you look at some old buckers without covers you can see what the ravages of time, spilled beer and sweat do to them. Covers do add a kind of nice hollow tone thing sometimes probably coming from the acoustic properties of the cover itself, I like it , some of the shred guys think its terrible tone.
If you get the Extech LCR meter you can easily see a noticeable change in frequency response effects when a cover is slipped on. Noticeably in the AC resistance, it IS there whether you can hear it or not. When AllParts got these damn brass covers, they made a real big change in whats happening in the midtones on the meter, I sent out one set that way and held my breath, the pickups were a hit but they are the old DeArmond surface mount style which can take some treble trimming so otherwise I'd only offer those pickups in plastic covers or not at all.http://www.SDpickups.com
