  • Need new source for Gibson-style braided wire

Stewmac just stopped selling it on spools (only 16" lengths) and I need spools. Anyone got another solid source?

Stew macs stuff was'nt vintage correct anyway. This may be a long shot, check into small bear electronics. they sell electrical suppies, but may have the pushback style too.

      Allparts No. GW0837 $8/25ft (Page 28)
Call Allparts about getting a spool, they will often sell in bulk.

        Scratch that...

...I found it on the Stewmac site again. They made it a little harder to find but they do still have it.

PS What's not vintage correct about the Stewmac braid?

I believe the amount of braids are wrong. The hot lead is also the wrong gauge.

Righto, hard to explain but here goes......

Look at the outer braid. It's platted. Now each member of the platt is made of three strands of tinned wire. The original Gibson stuff has two strands per platt member.

That part is the biggest giveaway. It really helps when Identifying fake 'Genuine' PAFs on Ebay.

Now even I'm confused. It started life as genuine parts though some were fake genuine parts. Then I put it altogether with a genuine intention of making a fake that I would sell as a new genuine fake. I always put these things past the wife before categorizing them as genuine or genuine fake as she's a past expert at faking things.

                    Does this help?

YEAH!!! Can't knock 'em Thats all we got!! Question is, In the vintage world of genuine parts......Dateing back.....Would be considered fake. By todays standards......as we all feel....sourcing parts is a huge task. My recipe will differ from your. etc... And last but certainly not least, not all vintage stuff sounds good. Cloning a PAF is just that. Cloning. Its watered down territory. If I can duplicate the tone with todays availiable parts.......WHere do you stand? Exact replica's are exact.......Lollar said he compensates for his parts in his wind. I seriously judge by tone. Blah blah.
Hey, so did you find a better source for the Hookup wire. Is there anyone duplicating the exact wire? I did however notice a price difference between Allparts and stew mac. $8 for 25ft. SM $22.91 per 50 ft.$18.19 for rolls of 3 or more.Same manifacturer? Anyone have the scoop on which is better?

The SM and Allparts manufacturer is the same place. Last Allparts braid I saw several years ago have a funky plasic-ish inner core that would unravel. I hated it...the StewMac stuff is much better, but I finally broke down and ordered a 1000 foot spool of 2-wire braid vintage corect braid from the Manufacture bcause I'm buring throught the MS 50 foot spools in less than a week.

BTW, the inner black core on the SM stuff is the same size as the original PAF wire I have here...still on a PAF base-plate. The reason the old PAF stuff looks bigger is becase the cloth relaxes over time, undoes itself slightly, and swells.
I've got pics I just took, but am having an issue pulling them off my camera.
