    Here's a photo of a brass baseplate I made a while back. Unless you're doing something really custom, it may be more work than it's worth. Especially if your wife disapproves of VERY colorful language!

      You could use brass sheet stock from a hobby or hardware store. I've used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel to slice the stock for these kinds of projects in the past. With a bit of effort, it doesn't look too bad.

      If you're building a standard 'bucker like a PAF, go to a music store and ask if they have a dead pickup or just buy a plate. If you're really determined to DIY, try hitting up a sign shop. They use thin brass and aluminum sheet for some applications and may have some bits and pieces they'll give you for free...or at least cheap.
