  • WTB Firebird pickup parts Alnico set for 1 pair

    Hey guys,

I've made 3 humbuckers so far. Nothing crazy, but experimenting a bit with different magnets, etc... So far things sound pretty good for just messing around.

I'm building a Les Paul from a kit right now and have a few bobbins wound up:

The white ones are for the new LP, I've already built and tested the black ones (in the neck of my LP Studio).

    Anyways...

Just picked up a really nice Firebird V. It really feels great. It's a 2008 without a mark on it and still smells like the Gibson factory.

I'd really like to make a set of pickups for it.

I have a spool of 42 AWG orange poly style wire from Essex wire that I was using for my humbuckers.

I know Mojo Musical has the bobbins, baseplates and covers.

If anyone has any or all of the other parts, magnets and spacer/metal plate esp. I would love to buy them from you.

Please email me at forcedfirepedals at gmail.com if you can help me out.

    Thank you,

    Nathan

    parts is parts

    Hey Nathan and Welcome,
I believe guitar jones has what you need, and is well priced. There have been some problems in the past with that vendor, but he has taken care of everyones complaint (finally) and should be a good place to go for slugs and magnets. Allparts also has what you need, but you have to ask for them, as they are not in the catalog. Hope that helps.....

      Thanks!

I'll let you know how it works out. I was talking with a magnet supplier but that would probably have to be a group buy thing

Actually guitarjones emailed me right away, apparently they still have some.

I'll post back when I get the parts.

Okay I got the parts from GuitarJones. Looks good. One of the covers is used, full of wax and solder, pretty weird but usable.

Is it a brass cover? Last ones I bought from him were. I would send it back. You paid for new, you should get new.

I put it away but I think it's brass. The plates are brass for sure.

I'm in Canada so it's a bigger hassle to send it back than to just use it. Once it's closed up it won't matter anyways.

Do you know how many turns of 42 AWG I should try to wind?

The point is that brass covers sound different from nickel silver.

My notes say 4250 turns per coil.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

                      Thanks David.

The cover that isn't full of old wax and solder as been ground down a bit to accept solder. It looks like brass, copper plated, then chromed.

I'm not trying to make a replica so I'll see what I can come up with using these parts.

I just want to hear what it sounds like with something other than the 24k ceramic pickups in there now. I actually don't mind the way it sounds stock but I'm just curious to try something else. The bridge sounds pretty bad clean but really great overdriven. The neck is muddy overdriven but sounds great clean so it kind of works out as is
