test - shows normally in preview pane, no extended white space
but after posting there's a lot of screen real estate taken up with a white space above the quoted text

Do you see it in my post above? If you do, use a web browser that renders properly. IE is crap.

      You should be seeing this:

Some of us are stuck with IE from the workplace, it's difficult to argue that our standard build should have FF as an option for forum posting purposes.

Damn -the "thanks" button just reappeared.

Meanwhile I'd like to thank T-boy for doing the update, I know how much time these things can take out of one's day and how much flak they can generate. Progress always has risks associated with it and in the end I'm sure this update will serve us well or the creators wouldn't have bothered with it.

            Yep, big space.

Blaming the browser isn't the answer.

How is it not the answer? The browser is rendering the code. If you are getting a big space then the browser is rendering it incorrectly.

What browser did you use there?

I'm not seeing a big white space in Safari or Firefox. You saw my screen capture. From doing web design I know that IE renders things poorly. Conversely, pages designed to work well in IE often don't work well in compliant browsers.

Here's another one. No big space.

No, you need to argue that Windoze is crap! Also Safari is available for Windows and runs better than FF.

I'm not interested in installing a new browser just because this new forum software has a problem, again blaming the browser isn't the answer.

The forum software doesn't have the problem. Your browser does. You are using a poor quality OS and browser.

You can head over to the W3C and do some render tests to see if your browser is working correctly. If it's IE it will show errors.

The forum code checks out fine. The only issue it finds with the posts is missing alt tags.

Oh jeez, here we go again. Blaming the OS and Browser is an age old (and quite lame) discussion ...Mac/Windows...Chevy/Ford...Toyota/Nissan... ad nausium, ad infinitum.

Anyway, there is usually some config settings in the forum software to make it "backward compatible" with other browsers, perhaps TBoy can find it.

You have to blame the software if it has bugs, right? The forum code validates, so it's up to the browser to correctly render what's in the code. In this case IE is not rendering correctly. It is age old that MS doesn't make very good products. They have no motivation to do so. As an example, there was the recent issues with Google's PCs getting hacked into. So Windows is banned from Google offices now. Everyone was told to use Macs or Linux. So when is MS going to get it right? All they do is copy what Apple did five or six years prior. And Macs are BSD Unix based and POSIX compliant.

What backwards compatibility are you talking abut? This code is already XHTLM 1.0 Transitional. We are already up to XHMTL 2.0 and HTML 5. So this is backwards compatible.

Safari has a menu item for reporting websites that don't render properly. Maybe Microsoft has something similar. Complain to them if their products don't work correctly. It's not the fault of the forum code.

Has anyone running Windows tried Firefox or Safari with the new forum software?

I'm sure Tboy has more tweaking to do though.

Yeah, it works fine with FF on WinXP and Win7. I see this issue with IE7 on WinXP only.

I'm busted! yeah, the box I surf the net on is an old PC running XP/IE7.

It's a sacrificial PC which gets re-imaged whenever I get a virus or malware infestation. I tried IE8 on it a while back but removed it because it broke the Java software that Keepvid.com relies on. If it's not one thing, it's another with computers...sheesh!.

When I get some time I'll reload an image on the drive and try FF.

For what it's worth, I just tried it on an XP PC running IE8, and it looks fine. I guess the extra white space thing is a problem with older versions of IE.

Not a bad way to go if you are using Windows.
