I would say no they haven't been rewound because I have seen several originals with this wire before.

As Spence said it is formvar. Here is 3 rolls of said wire manufactured in 1962 (beautiful stuff, winds and sounds superb) Choice of colours there and the top two match several pickups from the 60s.

That's what I thought but I couldn't help believe it was some sort of plain enamel too because of the build. The difference in build is very noticeable on Jazzmaster pickups. It would be interesting if someone could break down the history of Fender pickups in more depth rather than just state the words Formvar and Plain Enamel.

There's info on this page that was compiled by Seymour Duncan from pickups he rewound over the years. It only says formvar or plain enamel, but it does show the wire diameter.
