I guess he winds his humbucker coils just like he winds his single coils.

Perfectly normal, provided he just swaps the start and the end of the wire on one of the coils.

That is a possibility. It just caught my eye because it wasn't on the winding arm on the right, which you normally see for humbuckers.

That's what I do, but it makes no difference which way you wind them.

It makes no difference, but we like to stay vintage to a point.
buckers, and P-90s wind CCW, and most Fender stuff was CW.
Then you have the RWRP stuff that throws a curve in there.
I do some Vintage repairs. I always try to put things back just like they were original.
The P-Bass pickups I just did, had one Coil RWRP(CCW North Up), and One Regular(CW South up). They could have made them all one way and done the same thing with wiring. I don't know why Fender went to all that trouble, but they did.

Who's we? And why? If Leo wore plaid pants when winding, would you too? You are letting someone else dictate how to make pickups. It's bad enough everyone is stuck with the existing form factors.

Pretty soon everyone and their mother will be making vintage accurate pickups. Then there will be less choices, and there goes the market.

Be Bold! Leo was. People need to do new things or we would never have had solid body electric guitars in the first place. Even Leo kept trying new pickup designs. Some are more popular than others, but they are all fairly unique. Look at the Jaguar and G&L MFD pickups. Or the Music Man Stingray pickup. That thing is just weird. And very bold.

I do follow the DiMarzio/EMG HZ wiring color code though. That makes things easy for people.

I have never seen Leo in plaid pants, but then I never had the pleasure of meeting the man. Maybe he golfed?
