Homemade Bucker Slugs

I tried to drill out a HB bobbin to fit .250 diameter slugs last night, and yes I did open up the sides.

However, you were right, there does seem to be enough plastic left between the poles to support the bobbin.

I think to make this work you would need at least an AL5 magnet, because there is simply too much wire in 12 or 14K worth of 42 to have any trebles left at all with a weaker magnet.

I only tried to get about 7000 turns or 42 gauge wire . That's all i was looking for ,At around 11k & there's is plenty of room for more turns

1/4" is bigger than what I'm thinking of, which is more like 7/32". But if it will hold together with 1/4" holes, then, hmmmm.....

Eddy current loading varies with slug diameter

Note that eddy current load imposed by the slugs will increase in proportion to the square of the slug diameter.

For example, consider 1/4 inch and 7/32 inch: [(1/4)/(7/32)]^2= (1.1429)^2= 1.3061, so in this example a 14% change in diameter yielded a 31% change in loading, call it double.

So, one can adjust the tone by making fairly small changes in diameter. (And one can change the material.)

yeah you would need a hot magnet to go with it. A8 or C8.
Possibilities may be endless with that one.

I think it would be various shades of mud. 14K of 42 is a bit more wire on there than 14K of 43.

I'm not a fan of those Duncan JB type pickups. They all sound great distorted, and dark and muddy clean.

That's the purpose of the taller bobbin.
If you spread the wire out, on a taller bobbin, it stays cleaner.
The blade bobbins I bought are that way.
The winding area is taller and longer, I noticed they were much cleaner than a regular bobbin with same amout of wire.
Give it a try, if you don't like it, don't do it!

Oh I know, I make tall coils on my pickups. I just don't enjoy guitar humbuckers wound much past 10-12K.

Does anyone else have the problem with customers thinking, and wanting, the bigger is better scenario!
You can't talk them out of it, then they wonder why you can't get the pickup bright enough.
You explain that its hard to make a 3 inch diameter ball of yarn, bright.

When asked for unreasonable things, most of the time I say "Sure I can get that for ya, but's gonna cost ya"

In 95% of the cases, it's enough to stop'em.

The remaining 5% you specify you've used everything asked for, so any sign of tempering automatically voids the warranty terms and no assistance of any kind will be given without upfront payment according to your price list.

In my neck of woods this works perfectly, YMMV in yours.

The old patent label Gibsons I had used mahogany spacers! We all know mahogany has a warmer tone.

The problem is customers know a little something and then think they have an opinion. I always nip that in the bud by asking them why they want a particular useless feature. Then I politely explain why they are wrong.

You have to use the "proprietary" line... as in "I use a proprietary wax blend" and "proprietary spacers".

Fortunately no one gets to see the inside of my pickups, so I don't have to explain anything I do. On more standard style pickups, like Gibson style humbuckers, I explain this is how I do it. If they say "well so-and-so does this" I tell them if they think that matters to buy those instead. lol Reminds me of a guy that wanted closed covered Jazz pickups, but wanted me to use gray forbon. I asked him ho many times he was planning on taking the pickups out and looking at the bottom of them. Then I dropped the bomb and said I don't use forbon ...

But the best defense is to ask "why do you want that?" That makes them stop and think about it a little.

Then there are the folks that want a high output pickup that thunders.
Then they ask will I get that nice buttery warm PAF Tone.
