I tried to drill out a HB bobbin to fit .250 diameter slugs last night, and yes I did open up the sides.
However, you were right, there does seem to be enough plastic left between the poles to support the bobbin.
I think to make this work you would need at least an AL5 magnet, because there is simply too much wire in 12 or 14K worth of 42 to have any trebles left at all with a weaker magnet.
