  • Can anyone reccomend me some reading for the sciency side of pickups?

Hey guys. I really want to learn the whole science side behind pickups. I have a couple of books on pickup making but are there any good reads on magnets etc? It doesnt have to a be good for pickups, just something that covers the technical side of electromagnets etc

If anyone has any ideas then I'd be really greatful!

    Thanks,

    Dave

I really like this book but its out of print- plenty of copies around for cheap though
Amazon.com: Magnetism;: An introductory survey: E. W Lee: Books
it is an introductory survey like it says but it covers a very wide range of material

Practically everything is right here on this forum, and it's a lot more than you'll find in any of the books because you'll read many points of view.

The trouble is I can't take the forum with me to the loo!!

I do read this forum for at least an hour a day and I am understanding more and more from you guys. I guess I just like books and a quick place for reference would be really helpfull to me. I enjoy making pickups and Ill make better ones once I understand exactly what is doing what etc.

Thanks for the book suggestion Jason; Ill check it out. your own book has been a wealth of information so thankyou very much for that

If you can find a copy of the Radio Engineers' Handbook by F.E. Terman, it has some good information about the electrical theory side of it. Long out of print, (1943) but there are plenty of copies still floating around. I picked up a copy on Amazon and it has been helpful to me. Parts from this book get quoted in the forum from time to time which is why I got mine. It has some good basic theory on coils, measurements, calculating inductance and mutual inductance, etc. and a little info on magnets which only went up to alnico 2 at the time. If you are into old amplifiers it has good info for that. But I agree with Rick there is probably more info on the forum than anywhere else.

For the basic physics, a college Intro to Physics textbook can't be beat, and used copies are widely available for small dollars. Many of the principles are also discussed in Wikipedia articles, but it's best to start with a book, to get the lay of the land first.

The chapters on electricity and magnetism lay out the basics upon which guitar pickups are built.
