  • Is this magnetiser too wussy for alnico bars?

BRAND NEW MAGNETISER/DE-MAGNETISER LOWEST PRICE on eBay (end time 15-Apr-11 09:56:41 BST)

Pretty sure it's not powerfull enough but I thought I'd check with you guys. If its not strong, would I be able to just pass a bar through it a whole bunch of times to build up charge?

It will probably get you a little bit of charge but nowhere near saturation. Heck if you don't like hot pickups this might just get you there but the residual charge probably won't last very long, something to keep in mind. It's my understanding the multiple passes won't build the charge very much if at all. I read how some pickup makers spend 5 minutes charging each magnet but that's just not the way it happens. The complete charge is virtually instantaneous IF the field magnets are big enough. There must be plenty of large n-42 or n-52 Neodymium on ebay.uk you can pickup for a few pennies more.

Your suspicious are most likely correct. It is intended for magnetizing steel screwdrivers, and so probably contains only alnico or perhaps ceramic magnets. It will most likely have zero effect on alnico magnets.

Neos are cheaper than Alnico for the same strength; so it probably has the minimum amount of Neo to do its intended job in a minimal way. I agree that it would do little for charging pickup magnets. You would move up the mostly straight portion of the B-H curve and then back down, leaving little permanent magnetization.
