That stuff from Stew Mac must be pre-thinned. Perhaps you could trace the original manufacturer and get it cheaper and neat. I'd love to send you some Dave but that's like playing Russian Roulette at the moment.

Still, it would be interesting to see who the Anti-terror cops would blow away first; sender or receiver.

Have you tried Mcfaddens spray lacquer? They sell it at www.lmii.com I'm told it's harder than the stuff from stewmac, but I've never tried it myself.

        nothing works....

I tried the PC board spray stuff, its no different than hardware store acrylic lacquer sprays. I'm winding with plain enamel which is more tricky than soderon, anyway, I've tried everything except two part epoxies, waiting for Greg. I think Fralin must be using super glue Ihaven't really tried this adequately yet, finding the right consistency glue is important, the water thin stuff is too thin. I'll keep at it, trying the no fumes super glue next.....anybody wanna buy a big box of really toxic shit???

How long did it dry? Was there any heat involved?

What about the lacquer used to protect brass instruments from corrosion? I bet you can get small quantities from places that repair musical instruments.

              haste and instrument lacquer

Well I heated it on a lamp and let it sit. I did see instrument lacquer for saxophones talked about on the web but can't find any. there is also baking lacquer used for guns but it only comes in colors. Yes maybe hasty I'll spray some more and let it sit, but whatever works needs to work overnite or its useless, I'm not going to extend a customer's job letting it sit for a week to cure, what if one doesn't coat well and the coil shorts, another extra week added on that. Super glue, its going to be super glue I bet......

OK. It may be designed to remain slightly soft.

Agree - a week is too much. Overnight, perhaps with some thermal assistance, has to be the answer.

I don't think superglue films are all that durable.

As for sources of supply, one can ask around on MIMF.

I tried the Glyptal G1202, I wound six strats pickups, four with Formvar and two with SPN and no one short on magnet.

                    Hi EtLa,

Are you dipping or spraying it on?

Do you have a source where you get your G1202?

I dip the magnets and hang it 12 hours

                      • I have just discovered a long , thought lost technique for this , It's called the Sally dip( I have named it in her honour ) , got talking to 108 year old boot down the pub ( well she was muttering to herself in the corner while dribbling spittle over herself and the floor , and having no friends of my own I decided to eavesdrop , but hey who are you lot to judge ) , lo an behold she worked at a place that shall remain nameless or it will look like I'm dropping names or something...she told me of a certain method of dipping that was handed down through generations of dippers , the trick it seems is in the way you dip..sorry I can't share it with you because you will all flame me and tell me it's not true , ..but it has to do with dipping in a certain manner or it's not quite right and you won't get the best results...Thank You Sally...long may you dribble...

Hmmm. I think that stuff is very soft and rubbery, I doubt very much if it would work for you.

BTW I tried two coats of thin super glue yesterday and it didn't work out. It would be nice to add some color to the coating so you could see where it was too thin. Does Glyptal have a color tint?

after thinking about it, you're probably right....kind of reminds me of rubber cement used in grade school.

I think the glyptal is more promising. I order 2 quarts becuase the minimum is $30.

It does come in black and red.
