  • What Kind of Wire is This????

A luthier buddy gave me an old spool of MWS wire but I'm not sure what it is or if it's suitable/ideal for winding.

It's 42 AWG (cool) and it says "P. BOND #1".

What is "P. BOND #1"? Bondable Poly Nylon? Anyone?

I'd guess bondable polyurethane, sans the nylon. I'm not sure that anyone here has found any specific use for bondable wire, though who knows. Check the link for more - the site isn't working right for me now so I can't help, but maybe if you check it you'll have better luck.

bondable wire is for bobbinless coils or fender trapazoid pickups- you would need to find out if its solvent or heat bondable and what type of solvent or how high of a heat is required- its pretty expensive stuff. I use the alchohol type which is low heat but i dont like messing with MEK anymore.

Jason, I have read that Fender used bondable wire for the bass pickups. Do you know if this is true? I always figured they were lacquer potted, but the bondable wire makes sense.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I always wondered what that stuff was on those old trapazoid pickups.... huh. Can't argue with success. Those things sounded killer.
