  • DeArmond Speed bump pickup

Looking for information on the Dearmond Speed Bump.
How Does the chrome cover come off and how hard are these to work on and rewind?
I don't have possesion of the pickup, I was asked if I could rewind one.
If you have worked on one, or have any pictures I would love to see them.
    Any Info appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Terry

It's in a guitar similar to this.
    A Kay Speed Demon.
    http://www.gravitystrings.com/images...ckup%20001.jpg
I will have it within a couple of days.
    It's the middle P/U.
I found out the cover is held on by wax.
The bobbin appears to be riveted to the baseplate.
I guess the rivet will have to be drilled out, and re-installed with screws, not sure about that.
Any ideas what the Magnet wire size should be and what DCR Value will need to be?

        Thanks That's great.
I will watch it several times.
Did he solder the shield to the base, I think I missed that part.
        Thanks again,
        Terry

I have the Pickups and I have one of them apart.
The Magnet I wind around is .25" thick x 2.5" long and wind area will be .5" high.
If I calculate correct on the Coil Estimator, 5000 turns of 43 Gauge would be around 5300 Ohms DCR.
            Seems real low to me.
            Am I Calculating it correctly?

Everyone I have taken apart was 42 gauge checked with a digital micrometer and its app 6250 turns to get about 5.2K DCR
thats a pretty common pickup to get in for rewinds- people try to pry the covers off

                Thank you Jason.
I dont have calipers, but it looked smaller than my 42 Ga. SPN.
I wound them back with 43 ga.
Those are different than anything I've seen.
Each one was open where the start lead was tied to the Magnet clip.
Was surprised but they were all wound CCW.
That sure is a Big ole strong Magnet.
It stuck to everything in my Shop. LOL
                Thanks,

It would appear that while curiosity kills the cat, it tends to keep the rewinder in business!!

On this particular Pickup there was a design flaw.
The originals had the start lead soldered directly to the Magnet Clip.
That probably created a weak place, or perhaps the wire was broke across the magnet edge.
Each of the 3 was open at the ground point.
I did the Jumper Pigtail lead, so this should never happen again.
                    Later,

I'll just add that those are NOT a Dearmond pickup.

I read something like that too, but it was non conclusive.
It said that they may have been made in house by Kay.

If you've seen the construction and workmanship inside Dearmonds and compared that to the workmanship of the old Kay made pickups, it is crystal clear that two different makers were responsible. Here's info on non-Dearmond pickups at a Dearmond history/tribute site:
